American Eagle Weathervane

Icon of Our Freedom

Today is the day we kiss under the fireworks.  Grill out.  Wear our red striped shirt.  Give thanks for our soldiers.  It’s the 4th of July!  That being said, today we’re highlighting an antique American Eagle Weathervane.

This distinctly American eagle is made of heavy sheet iron and backed with a riveted hand wrought reinforcement.  It was made sometime in the mid to late 19th century.  What better way to celebrate the freedom of our country than to embrace this symbolic weathervane featuring our nation’s bird – the eagle – an icon of our freedom?  This rustic piece is available right here, right now from John Keith Russell Antiques.

The bald eagle, represented in this weathervane, is our national bird.  It is the only type of eagle that is unique to North America.  Of the approximate 70,000 in existence, about half of those reside in Alaska, and the rest are spread out up and down the pacific coast all the way down to Northern Mexico.  They don’t stray far from the coast, largely because of the salmon population present.

An eagle’s eye is almost as large as a human’s and four times sharper than the eye of a human who has perfect vision.

Eagles are faithful creatures.  Once they are paired, they remain with their mate until one dies.  The bald eagle symbolizes strength, power, freedom, nobility – all of the qualities that make America great.

Enjoy this Independence Day with your family.  Happy 4th of July, happy Independence Day, and of course, Happy Latiquing!
