Antique Walnut Wood Italian Cassone, Circa 1700

The cassone (coffre or trunk) was an Italian innovation during the 16th C., principally in Florence.   It featured various hand carved motifs from nature, animal origin, human origin and more.  Often the plinths were gadrooned lobed motifs with paw feet.  They were used for a variety of decorative and storage purposes.

This antique Italian cassone has been hand carved out European walnut wood and dates to the late 1600s or early 1700s.  The motifs are stylized shells, a central cartouche of scrolling rinceau and flower heads, bead and reel linear moldings, and a linear molding with fruit, nuts, flowers and leaves, all on a mixture of patterned and plain grounds.  The gadrooned plinth is centered with an acanthus leaf and the front feet are lion’s paws.  The back feet are stylized bracket feet.  The interior has been partially lined with paper recently.  There is a “valuables” box on the interior top left.

Condition:  Good antique condition with old restorations, rubs, nicks, and age separations; old marks to top where old hardware once was.
