Antique Cherrywood Trunk with 18th Century Panels

This is a very interesting trunk that we found a few months ago in France.  All of the panels are easily 18th century, and the wood is ‘merisier’ or Cherry.  The piece is adorned with very unique carvings, including Maltese crosses on the front.  The cross gets its origins as the symbol of the Knights of the island of Malta.  In the 15th century, the eight points of the four arms represented the eight points of courage. The piece has many more interesting motifs on the side panels and even the top.

Other motifs are of the Phoenix on the top panels which represent immortality, in general, and the front panels have swallows within the interior of the Maltese cross.  Generally, the swallow represents resurrection.  Numerous other Louis XV style motifs are depicted throughout the trunk .

Condition:  Previous alterations, rubs and nicks to wood, age separations, all commensurate with age. Panels are from the 1700's, while frame is from the 1800's.
