19th Century Cherrywood Homme Debout

This elegant homme debout has been constructed of beautifully grained cherrywood with its original steel hardware throughout.  Its lines are rectangular with canted corners at the crown and body.  It has two doors separated by two drawers. There are very detailed and tiny hand carved motifs of stylized baskets of wheat at the center of the frieze and top door .  The sides have two panels each.  A portion of the front legs and feet has been replaced at some point in time.  The back feet are block feet typical of 18th C. and early 19th C.  The hinge is one single piece running the entire height of the front doors.

Homme Debout translates directly to "standing man". The story goes that this name came from men hiding in these armoires to avoid being seen by enemies. Originally, these pieces were used for storage of clothing, hats, and accessories. Now, they can still be used for such purposes, but more often they are placed in small rooms such as powder baths for linens,  dining areas, or bedrooms where they can store any number of things including small TV's or electronics.

Condition: Old restorations to feet; partial losses of wood, old woodworm traces,age separations, nicks and rubs all consistent with old Cherrywood.

H=77 3/8, Crown Width=47 5/16, Depth=26 3/8 (not including crown)
