Early to Mid 1700's Oak Bordelais Trunk

This European Oak, Louis XIII style trunk from Bordeaux features panel ornamentation of drapery swags.  The front panel has a central motif of a woman’s face between the swags while the side panels bear just swags.  Flanking the panels are fluted corner pilasters with decorative blocks half way down.

Louis XIII style furniture was very geometric in appearance and could appear austere, but in this case, the cabinetmaker used the drapery swags, the female face and the decorative blocks to soften the lines, making for an overall pleasing effect.  The interior has a lidded wooden container on the upper left hand side, usually meant for valuables.  The feet are block feet all around and there is a fabulous large key and lock on this wonderful Bordelais trunk.  Its size and flat top made it easily transportable by carriage or wagon when the owners would travel to their country houses with their belongings.

This Louis XIII style trunk can be used for storage, as an end table, or simply as a wonderful piece of French furniture history in any room. Condition: Previous old restorations to back foot; rubs, nicks and age separations commensurate with age.
